Help for Struggling Readers and Spellers of all Ages: Teaching for Understanding Leslie Chalmers Gravel, licensed and certified speech & language therapist, is offering an informative and interactive workshop for parents and educators of struggling readers. We will begin to see that the foremost purpose of English spelling is not to represent speech, but to convey sense and meaning in text. We will learn why sounding-out words fails struggling readers and writers. You will have the opportunity to analyze English words by looking at their structure and meaning. Working with words this way, spelling makes sense, reading improves, and vocabulary is enriched.
What you will come away with: A deeper understanding of the English spelling system and a sense of how we can spell our way into reading; print and online resources for ongoing learning and consultation; tools and strategies to implement with your child; opportunities for further study.
